Update on USPS Changes

USPS appears to have rolled back some of their recent API/shipping method changes so we will be releasing updates for USPS Advanced 4 and 5 over the next few days. The primary issues are with First Class domestic and international methods. All other methods appear to be working fine.

As mentioned previously, USPS International will not be updated as it is not tenable for it to support the updated USPS API. Support for USPS Domestic and USPS International ceased several months ago however both modules will work to a certain extent. It is up to the user to decide whether to keep using those modules but no further updates will be made to address any issues with them.

USPS May 12 Rate and API Changes

The "backwards compatible" changes USPS has instituted are not actually backward compatible but so far they seem to have caused minimal damage, apart from the disappearance of "First Class" methods. These are not available as their names have been changed--again! Even the plain old "First-Class Mail" was renamed to "First Class Mail". Obviously the hyphen needed to be removed to reduce costs.

As of 3pm Tuesday, USPS Advanced 5 has been modified to address the issues. USPS Advanced 4 will be updated next. Click the "check for update" link within your module to download the latest version.

After these minor changes, we will look at the available information (USPS docs have not been updated since 2007!) to see what other modifications are needed as we would dearly like to add support for the new international dimensional weights.

UPS Rates Server Outage

The UPS rates server is apparently experiencing problems this afternoon, 1/2/2008. Nothing in any error logs appears as though there has been a change to UPS API. There's not much to be done other than to wait it out and wait for UPS to fix the problems on their end.

You may also want to try contacting UPS tech support to notify them of the issue.

USPS API Changes

The forthcoming USPS rate changes have lead to some major changes in their API. Our USPS Advanced shipping module will support most of these changes. USPS Domestic and USPS International will only support changes that are applicable at the global level, e.g. the renaming of several international shipping methods. These two modules do not have the capability to support product or category-level changes, such as dimensional weights, the First Class mail types, etc.

5/13/07: USPS International users can download an update that will provide rate calculations using the new shipping method names.
